Anything less than 20/20 vision may require a visit to your eye specialist. There are many conditions that are responsible for low vision acuity, so consult an eye doctor right away if you experience any of the following.

1. Farsightedness & Nearsightedness
Nearsightedness (myopia) is a common condition caused by an elongation of the eyeball. The light coming into the eye cannot focus on the retina properly, making it hard to see faraway objects. Farsightedness (hyperopia), on the other hand, is a condition that makes it difficult to see nearby objects.

Southwest Vision Center has trusted eye doctors in Granger, IN, who measure vision loss using the Snellen Test Chart, along with an eye exam. They will then prescribe the right glasses or contact lenses to compensate for the refractive errors.

2. Dry Eyes
This occurs when the eye is unable to produce tears properly, or when the tears are not of the right consistency and vaporize too quickly. Dry eyes can make it harder to do some activities, such as using the computer or reading for an extended time. Left untreated, this condition can lead to pain, scars on the cornea and some vision loss. The treatment and management of dry eyes is often the forte of an eye doctor, so be sure to consult us immediately.

3. Foreign Body Removal
A foreign object in your eye can be painful and irritating. Usually, a thorough wash with clean water is enough to remove the object, but occasionally this approach is insufficient. Some foreign bodies can irritate the eye to the point of redness, and even begin to interfere with proper vision. Consult your optometrist in Granger, IN, right away, so the condition doesn’t affect other parts of your eye.

4. Eye Exams & Check-ups
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends a full eye exam every two years for adults, and yearly for seniors. Children should have their first eye exam at six months of age, next one at age three and again at the start of school.

Southwest Vision Center is a family eye care provider, so feel free to bring your family in today for eye exams. We also handle other eye-related conditions, such as vision therapy, eye infection treatment, and the management and diagnosis of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
